WAIKAKA GENETICS 50TH ANNUAL HEREFORD BULL SALE MAY 30TH 2024

Welcome to our 50th annual sale here at Waikaka Station

50 Sales. Where did that time go? They say time flys when you are having fun, and we certainly have had lots of that. We are gearing up for a huge celebration to mark our 50th on farm sale. And would like to invite everyone who has helped shape Waikaka along the way to come and join us. We will have live music, food, drinks and stories to share and of course a few fine Herefords through the ring.

To commemorate our 50 years, we have 8 elite in calf heifers for sale, joining our lineup of 24 standout polled Hereford bulls from Injemira Robert Redford, Waikaka Artillery, Mawarra Showtime and more.

The Cattle Men and Women we have met, the magnificent properties we have visited, and the friends we have made over this time have been the true highlight of our time breeding herefords. Our foundations were laid with some legendary horned Bulls, Waikaka Silverton, Injemira Jamaica, Hikatu Lightning, Waikaka Desert Storm, Leader 07220 and the cornerstone sires of our shift to Polled Herefords have included Lake V101 “Bob”, Monymusk Eiffel Tower, Otapawa Red Wolf and Matariki Jetson.

Seeing the breed evolve from Belly Button cattle to Skyscrapers and back to the sensible cattle we have today. Mid frame with muscle has been a journey. The advent of Breedplan which allowed industry wide calving of two year old heifers, predictable calving ease, growth and milk as well as increases in EMA and IMF has made the breed the ultimate all rounders. Having our Bulls judged Supreme at the National Hereford Expo sale Twice was very satisfying too. Breaking a 9 year old cow in for the World Hereford Conference show where she was judged Supreme Animal was definitely a highlight as was our two year old heifer being judged “best exhibit in show” at Wyndham Show and winning Supreme Animal at Wanaka Show this year with the Yearling bull Redford 2266 when we just went along for the ride.

Of course none of that could have been achieved without the people working on the property and all the others who have pitched in and helped out with the sale year after year. We thank them all for their contribution and support of Waikaka Genetics and our team over the past 50 years. Particularly those who have bought Waikaka genetics over the years, given advice, the companies and agents we have worked with and also those who sponsor our catalogue. We have always tried to base our herd on common sense goals not pursuing unattainable genetic dreams.

We are looking forward to catching up with everyone following the sale. We would like to invite you to view the bulls by appointment prior to the sale which will give you a chance to see them all together in the paddock, and we look forward to catching up with you then. If you are unable to travel we will happily show an agent around on your behalf, or can arrange a virtual paddock viewing where we can video call from the bull paddock and single out any particular bulls you would like a closer look at.

All bulls have been BVD tested clear and vaccinated twice. All bulls have been semen tested and passed by Xcell. Bulls sold within Otago and Southland regions will be personally delivered by Laurie, and freight free shipping is available as far as Fielding in the North Island. All of the bulls at the fall of the hammer will be insured under FMG’s Premier Bull cover for 14 days following this sale. Please refer to the FMG statement at the back of this catalogue.

We can’t wait to celebrate this milestone with you,

Laurie, Sharon, Ross & Steph, Ollie, Emmie and Leo
